Police arrested a 16-year-old girl in west Wichita after her mother reported a handgun missing from the family’s home.
Officer Charley Davidson said in a press release that officers were called to a disturbance report just after 7 Wednesday morning, and a 38-year-old woman reported a missing handgun. The woman told officers she believed her daughter had the gun and the girl was on the way to school. Officers found the school bus at Maple and Glenn, and they found the loaded gun in the girl’s backpack.
The girl was booked into the juvenile detention center on possession of a firearm by a juvenile and a charge of theft. Police said no threats were made, there was no disruption of school activities and no one was hurt. Detectives are continuing their investigation and they’ll present information to the Sedgwick County district attorney’s office.
