Sedgwick County will have an amnesty day for parents who are facing arrest for falling behind on child support payments. The amnesty will be offered Friday, September 20th from 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the Atwater Neighborhood Center at 19th and Volutsia in Wichita.
18th Judicial District court trustee Carl Wheeler said non-custodial parents who have bench warrants for their arrest can go in and pay the lesser of $500 or two months of child support payments. That will remove the threat of arrest, and there will be information on programs and services to help parents with employment and other needs. Wheeler said the goal is to get the parents back into the court and back into the system and work with them to get them back on track for child support.
The annual amnesty day started in 2008, and Wheeler said it has resulted in around 35 to 45 warrants being lifted on that day.
The amnesty day is offered through the Kansas Department for Children and Families. The money collected Friday will go to the children for their support needs.
