The Cold Weather Rule goes into effect Friday.
Under the rule, utility companies are barred from turning off service when temperatures are at or below 35 degrees within the following 48 hour period. The rule also requires utilities to offer a 12-month payment plan for customers to pay off the overdue balance to maintain or re-establish their service.
Customers will need to pay 1/12th of the total amount owed, plus 1/12th of their current bill. It is the responsibility of utility customers to contact their provider to make payment arrangements.
The Cold Weather Rule will remain in effect through March 31.
