Sedgwick County to furlough 150 employees due to COVID-19 outbreak

Sedgwick County has sent notices to around 150 workers asking them to take voluntary furloughs during the coronavirus outbreak.

The workers represent non-essential county employees, mainly office staff, and they are being asked to voluntarily furlough from April 19th through May 24th.  If there aren’t enough volunteers, the county will carry out mandatory furloughs from April 26th through May 24th.

The workers would still be covered by health insurance but they would need to file for unemployment during the furlough, and they won’t be able to use paid time off or vacation time.

The furlough plan will be presented to county commissioners on Wednesday.

The county has around 2,800 employees.
