Kansas has received a shipment of 10 cases of the experimental anti-viral drug Remdesivir.
The drug has shown promise in Europe and early testing the United States to help treat severe cases of Covid-19. The shipment that arrived this week contains enough to treat around 50 patients, according to Kansas Department of Health and Environment Secretary Dr. Lee Norman.
The drug has been distributed to Kansas hospitals to help treat severe cases of the virus. Norman says the shipment is the first of four that Kansas will receive.
The drug has not completed clinical trials for full approval, but the Food and Drug Administration gave it Emergency Use Authorization to treat severe cases of Covid-19. Cases that are considered severe are those who are being given oxygen because their oxygen levels have dropped dangerously low, those who are being treated with a ventilator, or on a heart and lung bypass machine.
