Sedgwick County jail reports 123 confirmed cases of COVID-19

The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed 123 cases of the COVID-19 virus in the county jail.  That breaks down to 112 cases among inmates and 11 cases for staff members.

Testing for all inmates and staf began Monday, and all current inmates are expected to be tested this week.  The jail has 1,510 inmates.

The Sheriff’s Office said as inmates arrive in the detention facility housing area, they will be housed separately and tested.  When the results are in, the inmates will be housed according to their test results.  Inmates who have tested positive will be housed together, and inmates who test negative will be housed together.   Any inmate with symptoms is being housed separately in isolation.

Jail officials are working with state and county health officials and the contracted medical provider on steps to deal with the pandemic.  The jail is also continuing to maintain sanitization efforts to take care of staff and inmates, and that includes having extra soap and having disinfectant available as needed.   All staff members have been issued masks to wear and all inmates have been issued face coverings over the past few months.   The jail has also employed a contractor to sterilize the facility.
