One dead, three injured in east Wichita shooting

One person was found dead and three others went to a hospital with injuries after a shooting in an east Wichita neighborhood early Sunday morning.

Neighbors reported hearing a number of shots and cars speeding away shortly after 2:30 a.m. in the 5200 block of East 2nd Street, in a neighborhood south of the intersection of Central and Oliver.

Officers found a 20 year old man dead in the backyard of a home in the 200 block of North Battin. Three other men, ages 17, 26, and 29, were found at a home with non-life threatening gunshot wounds. They have since been released from the hospital.

Investigators learned that the victims were all at a party at a home on Battin, which was being rented out as an Airbnb. The company put out the following statement regarding this incident. “Airbnb bans parties, and we are appalled at the reported violence. Our team is urgently investigating this incident and have reached out to Wichita Police Department to aid in their investigation.” Airbnb says the party at this home was held without the host’s knowledge or consent.

Police are still investigating and trying to determine the events that led up to the shooting. They said that cooperation from the victims has been limited, but this does not appear to be a random incident.
