Severe thunderstorms moved through south central Kansas late Wednesday night and early Thursday, bringing strong winds that brought down power lines and caused power outages in the area.
A wind gust of 69 miles an hour was reported at Jabara Airport, with reports of 59 mph at Eisenhower National Airport and 60 mph at McConnell Air Force Base. Emergency crews were called to check on downed power lines in Wichita and there were scattered outages in the south part of the city and in Derby.
A tornado warning was issued for parts of Butler and Cowley counties when National Weather Service radar indicated rotation with a storm near Atlanta. There were no confirmed reports of a tornado. There were also tornado warnings issued briefly for parts of Marion, Dickinson and Morris counties when rotation was picked up on radar.
Storms on Wednesday afternoon brought reports of a tornado southeast of Hays, and tornado warnings were issued for parts of Ellis, Rush, Barton, Ellsworth and Russell counties. There were no reports of significant damage.
Heavy rain from the slow-moving storms triggered flood warnings across north central Kansas.
