An inmate in the Sedgwick County Detention Facility is facing new charges after an attack on a detention deputy early Tuesday.

The Sheriff’s Office said a deputy was trying to get an inmate to return to his cell after being let out to shower around 2:40 a.m. Tuesday.    The inmate made threats to the deputy,  then the deputy was struck at least two times with a fist.   The deputy was knocked to the floor but he was able to move to a secure location and other staff moved in to take custody of the inmate and return him to his cell.

The deputy received 15 stitches and had several facial fractures.   After receiving treatment at a hospital, the deputy was released to return home.

The 31-year-old inmate has been in custody since May 2nd, 2020.  He was being held on sex crime charges and charges of battery on a correctional officer and a law enforcement officer.   He is now facing a charge of aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer.
