The Wichita City Council has voted unanimously to rename the McAdams Recreation Center as the Carl G. Brewer Community Center, after the late former mayor.

Brewer served on the City Council and then as mayor from 2001 to 2015.   He is credited with shaping downtown revitalization, development of the Eisenhower National Airport and the start of the project for the new Advanced Learning Library.

The recreation center is being redesigned, and there will be a major reconstruction and expansion in 2022 and 2023.

Wichita resident James Barfield raised concerns about removing the name of Emerson McAdams from the center, and he felt that would be a disservice to McAdams and to Brewer.   McAdams was a former police officer and park director for the city.     City Council member Brandon Johnson said the new center will tell the story of McAdams and he said the legacy of McAdams will be respected.   He said the center will tell the stories of McAdams and Brewer, and McAdams Park will be a destination park for the community.
