Sedgwick County commissioners have voted to approve a regulation establishing a fine for someone shooting a firearm into another person’s property. Commissioners talked about the issue last month and deferred action to their meeting Wednesday.
The resolution establishes a $500 fine for someone discharging a firearm with the bullet going into another person’s property. There are exceptions for permission of a property owner, self defense, law enforcement actions and hunting under certain conditions.
The issue came about with people living in a new addition near 55th South and Woodlawn claiming that bullets from property owners on the other side of a tree line are hitting their property. The bullets were from a private shooting range.
The vote was 4-1 to approve the regulation, with Commissioner Lacey Cruse voting no. She said the fine would not be enough to cover the cost of law enforcement and she felt there were other issues that needed to be addressed.
