In an effort to lower gas prices, the EPA is allowing the use E15 fuel over the summer.

This fuel has a higher ethanol content than regular fuel, and is typically not allowed during summer months in an effort to reduce smog.

Representative Tracey Mann released the following statement regarding the EPA’s move.

“Prices at the pump are out of control, and using a home-grown resource like ethanol is a workable solution that Americans deserve,” said Rep Mann. “While it’s months overdue, I’m glad to see that the President has finally signed a waiver for E15 use this summer. Since ethanol is an available, affordable, and renewable way to reduce our dependence on foreign oil, I believe that we should be using E15 year-round.”

It is important to note that higher ethanol fuels cannot be used in all vehicles, and can cause damage to older vehicles. If you plan on filling up with E15 or a higher ethanol content fuel, make sure you vehicles is capable of using it.

Although fuels with higher ethanol content may be cheaper per-gallon, their energy densities are lower, which will result in lower fuel economy when compared to E10 or fuel without ethanol.
