All buildings in the Lansing, Kansas school district were placed on lockdown as a precaution Tuesday after an inmate walked away from the Lansing Correctional Facility.

An emergency headcount was conducted at the prison, and inmate Michael Stroede was placed on escape status shortly after 11 a.m.   Stroede, who is 43, was described as 5 feet 10 inches tall and 180 pounds with blond hair, although a mug shot showed him with a shaved head.   Corrections officials said Stroede was a minimum-custody inmate who was serving a 111-month sentence for a 2021 drug conviction in Rice County.   He has previous convictions dating back to 1999 for theft, burglary, drug distribution and criminal damage to property.

School officials in Lansing, USD 469, were planning to dismiss classes at the normal time.
