A Wichita man who was convicted in the fatal shooting of his estranged wife has died at the Hutchinson Correctional Facility.
Corrections officials said 30-year-old Juan Caballeros-Yescas was found unresponsive in his cell Wednesday morning. Life-saving measures were performed but he was pronounced dead. An autopsy will be conducted, but prison officials said a preliminary assessment indicates the death was not related to COVID-19.
Caballeros-Yescas was serving a 270-month sentence on convictions in Sedgwick County for first degree murder, aggravated robbery and aggravated assault. He was convicted in the 2018 shooting death of 41-year-old Lucy Mojica at a home in the 500 block of West 17th Street North. Caballeros-Yescas was identified as a suspect and he was arrested later in El Paso, Texas. He pleaded guilty last year before his jury trial was to begin.
