The Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office is warning residents to watch out for the “grandparent scam,” where someone gets a call from a person claiming to be a grandson or granddaughter, asking for money.

The DA’s office received a report Monday from a citizen who said he received two phone calls.  One was from someone who claimed to be his grandson, saying he had been in a car crash and was being threatened with arrest.  The second call was from an attorney claiming to represent the grandson, asking for a $14,000 cash bond.  Both calls were from the same number.   The DA’s office said the name given by the attorney was not someone licensed to practice law in Kansas, and a name given for the judge who set the bond amount did not match any judge in Sedgwick County.

The citizen did not give out any personal information and he reported the call to the DA’s office.

The Consumer Protection Division of the DA’s office says residents should not answer phone calls from numbers they don’t recognize, and they should never give out personal information in response to unexpected calls.
