The Kansas Bureau of Investigation said violent crime was down in 2022, according to the agency’s latest crime statistics.

The KBI released its 2022 Kansas Crime Index Report on Monday, and it listed 12,849 violent crimes in the categories of murder, rape, robbery and aggravated assault.

The agency said violent crime had been steadily rising each year since 2014, but it seems to be leveling off with declines in 2021 and 2022.   In spite of the decline, the number of violent crimes last year is still 9.2 percent above the ten-year average, and it has not yet returned to pre-pandemic levels.

The KBI report said overall property crimes in Kansas were down by 10 percent last year.  Property crimes have been on a steady decline since 2017, but property crime offenses are assumed to be underreported to law enforcement.
