Wichita City Council members have given unanimous approval to a new name for a new park in the Delano neighborhood.
Park and Recreation director Troy Houtman said the city owns several parcels of land along the 500 block of North McLean, between Vine Avenue and Fern Avenue. The land was designated as a park in July, and it was given the temporary name of Poem Park. Houtman said this was property that the community did not want to see developed.
The Delano Neighborhood Association met several times to talk about the naming of the park and recommended the name Millwood Park, and that was approved in August by the city’s park board. City Council member Maggie Ballard said there has been a lot of discussion about turning the area into a public park and it was important to have the neighborhood involved in the naming.
Millwood Avenue is a street that runs in the middle of the park area and the name identifies the location of the park.
