Wichita leaders had a ribbon-cutting ceremony Wednesday afternoon to open the new Amidon Bridge to traffic.

The bridge on North Amidon between 13th and 21st Streets was closed in September, 2022 for reconstruction work, and the project was expected to take 14 months but it was completed ahead of schedule.   It replaces a bridge that was built in 1964.

All four lanes of the bridge were reopened, but the city reports that some lane closures will be needed at times through the end of the year to finish some enhancements such as lighting.   The sidewalks and bike paths are open and ready for use, and some site restoration work will continue into the spring.

Traffic was detoured to West Street at 13th and 21st during construction, and a temporary fire station was set up to provide coverage for the Riverside neighborhood.  The fire station at 13th and West Street will remain open through the end of the year.
