Police have released updated information on a fatal shooting Monday night at an apartment complex in southeast Wichita.

The shooting was reported around 7:20 p.m. at the Sugar Creek Apartments near Pawnee and Oliver.   A number of shots were fired from a handgun into an apartment, striking people inside.

Police said 1-year-old Taidyn Anderson was killed.   Two 24-year-old women were taken to a hospital with critical injuries, but police said the injuries are not life-threatening.   In addition, there was a 24-year-old man, a 5-year-old girl and a 10-month-old girl in the apartment at the time of the shooting, but they were not injured.

Police believe the apartment was targeted, but the circumstances are still under investigation and detectives are following up on leads for the arrest of the suspect.

Police Chief Joe Sullivan called the act “cowardly” and called on the gunman to turn himself in.   He said there were three children in the apartment at the time but the gunman didn’t know or didn’t care who was inside.  Sullivan said police have very strong direction in the investigation and he said someone will be held accountable.
