The Kansas House of Representatives has failed to override Governor Laura Kelly’s veto of a Republican-sponsored flat tax bill.

The vote in the House was 81-42, short of the 84-votes needed for the override.

GOP leaders said the bill would simplify the tax code, exempting the first $6,150 of income and taxing the remainder at a rate of 5.25 percent.  Governor Kelly said the bill would hurt lower and middle-income Kansans and benefit only higher-income residents.

The governor is calling on lawmakers to work on a responsible plan that will cut taxes for middle class families.  She has said she will call a special session if the Legislature fails to approve a plan during the regular session.
