The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office said an inmate in the Detention Facility was found unresponsive in his jail cell early Thursday, and he was pronounced dead.

Staff found the inmate around 5:30 a.m. in Pod 18 and medical staff was called along with EMS crews.  They provided medical treatment, but the inmate was declared dead.

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation and the Sheriff’s Office Investigations Division are looking into the death.  Preliminary information indicates the inmate died of self-inflicted asphyxiation.

The 22-year-old man had been in the jail since August on a capital murder charge.  His name was not released pending notification of family members.

This is the seventh in-custody death at the Detention Facility this year.
